Compassion is caring

Hello and welcome to anorther blog by your's truly RBL. This blog was based off a podcast about compassion. This was a topic that's really important to me. Here is my recording if you would like to listen and read. Thank you and enjoy!

"

Artists are the gatekeepers of truth...we are civilization’s radical voice.” -Paul Robeson

“I am a writer perhaps because I’m not a talker.”- Gwendolyn Brooks

My name is RBL  and my belief is compassion. For most of my life I’ve been in a poetry group known as Rebirth where we write about social justice issues.

For example in one poem, I wrote about Emmet Till. I wanted to show people the pain that Mamie, his Mother felt and what other black people felt when they heard about what happened to him. When thinking about compassion you want to help people to cope with their pain or try to understand other’s pain. Another reason why I believe in compassion is because it teaches people to actively care for each other.

Since I was little, homlessness is something I’ve been concerned about. I didn't think there was anything I could change about it since I was so young. Last term I got a chance to try and bring change to the problem. I did this by making a facebook fundraiser with my Mom to help support an organization who is trying  to fix the predicament themselves. I was able to raise 450 dollars for the shelter in only a few short days. That made me think about how we could impact homelessness if more people contributed something towards making a change and showing compassion.

I feel like wanting to help people and caring about other people was passed down to me from my Grandma. From my interview with her she told me that she was a teacher for 32 years in elementary school in the Cleveland Public Schools. She’s also compassionate because sometimes when we go to Cleveland we often go visit some of her friends who live in senior citizen centers. It is really nice to meet some of her friends because it seems like they enjoy my company and appreciate that someone is spending time with them.

In closing, I chose compassion as my belief because I felt like I’ve been in a poetry group that showed me why compassion is important. I’ve done a project for school that showed me how I could use compassion to help others. Last I’ve come from people who were compassionate and who also wanted to help others. In most families they bring money down to different generations, but my family passed down compassion and I wish I can pass that on to you.

Oil overview

This blog is about oil, for my school project I had to create a power point about oil, how it's used and how it's consumed. This was really fun to do because I got to learn a lot more about oil that I didn't really know before. Please enjoy my slideshow presentation.

Farms over foraging by RBL

Hello this is Rbl and in this blog I will be telling you about why farming is better than forging.1 reason why I see farming better than foraging is because we can look at some of the earliest farmers who lived in Fertile Crescent, a region in the Middle East including modern-day Iraq, Jordan, Syria, Israel, Palestine, southeastern Turkey and western Iran. We can look and see that farming can be a source of wealth then to comparing it to foraging you can’t usually make profit from foraging. Another reason why I think foraging is worse than farming is because 2 billion people use farming where as 5 million people have subsisted by foraging. This shows that more people in the world use farming than foraging making farming a lot more popular in the world. Even though farming is a great source of wealth, there are some things that can cause major issues with farming. For example to farm you need a good place to farm, a good place for rain, the right tools to farm,  and rain and depending on rain can be pretty hard. In conclusion, farming is better than foraging because it can help you make good profit from selling your crops and helps you to learn about how to farm yourself.

And remember Foraging is danger, Farming is safer!

Homeless people in need for help even in the season of giving-RBL

Hello this is RBL and in this is my post about homelessness in Chicago. As most of you should know, homelessness is a BIG issue and isn't a problem you can only see in Chicago, it's something that can be seen all over the world. Here is my power point and I go into a lot more of the issues there.

I'm also starting a go fund me page to help donate to the night ministry for their support towards helping people who are homeless, and people who have mental heath issues.

Football Shaped Filter

I designed a water filter with three layers of filtration. After we learned that we would not be able to make the filters at school, I had to adapt my design. I decided to cut two plastic bottles and put them together to make a double sided water filter. At first I wanted to make a filter that had more than one part.

Here was my original design. But when it got closer to the time of turning in the filter on time this became harder to make. On top of that I also didn't have the materials to make this design. This made it harder for me to think of a good idea for the project. Then I noticed that my brother had a lot of bottles that he made art with. So I decided that I would make a filter that on one side there was the top where to water would be filter. On the other side the water would go down into your cup so you could drink it that way

My filter is made from cutting two plastic bottles in half and attaching them. This is why it has a football shape. The water is filtered through activated charcoal, zeolite blend and polyester mesh fabric.

    Filter was made of:
    5 tsp of zeolite blend
  • 0.38 ounces of activated charcoal

  • Polyester fiber mesh bag
Container was made of:

Ziploc bag strip

Scotch tape

Packing tape
Plastic bottles

Here is what my water looked like before filtering, as you can see my water is very dirty and needs to be cleaned

Here was my filtering process, on the top there is the filter, when the water is poured from the top it will go trough the filter and down to the bottom so it will be ready to drink. The red line is suppose to help you measure how much water you should put in at a time so none of it leaks out. As you can see this here is the process

Here is my water post filtering, I then put in the water strip to test for the ph hardness and nitrate. When you compare it to the water post filtering you can see that there isn't as much pepper in the cup and the particles you can't really see as much where you can see them a lot easier before filtering

Comparison between the United States and Guatemala's poverty rate through gender: By RBL

Hello this is RBL and this blog will be based on the topic of poverty rates between the United States and Guatemala. If you don't know what poverty rate means, it's a comparison of the number of people (in a given  group) whose income falls below the poverty line. It's also used to see who needs help with paying for things like rent, healthcare, and car insurance.

Poverty is a topic that impacts millions of people across the world, but it's about time that we learn that we learn and see poverty from a different perspective. Poverty rate depends on wealth, access to jobs, race, gender, and educational opportunities. The poverty rate for males in the United States is 17.1% but for females it’s 21.35%.. Guatemala’s poverty rate is 29.8%  for women and 24.6 % for men. We can see that in both countries there is more poverty for women than men. The research suggests that the poverty rate in Guatemala is about 50% more than the poverty rate in the United States. Bridgewater University states that, “Human progress is certainly affected when women, who represent over half of the global population, own only one percent of the world’s wealth and hold only sixteen percent of the world’s parliamentary positions.” With this in mind, poverty is worse in Guatemala than the United States because the United States has more money and more financial support from other countries. Unlike the United States, Guatemala has almost no support from other countries around it. The fact that Guatemala has very little outside support increases poverty because the economy is struggling. Because the poverty rate in Guatemala is worse than in the United States, there isn’t enough money and key items like money, food, and good housing are too hard for people to access.

The official poverty rate in the United states is around 9.2 percent, with the rate for white, non-Hispanic people at 6.6 percent; the rate for Black, non-Hispanic people at 15.2 percent; and the rate for Hispanic people at 13.8 percent. This information shows us that depending on what race you are, your financial situation will be different from other types of people. Poverty rates is the ratio of the number of people (in a given age group) whose income falls below the poverty line or the income needed to do well in a given society. In the United

States' gender makes a big difference in the main pay gap. The pay gap is still unfair with the fact that women make 82 cents for every dollar a man earns. The pay gap helps to show if a person can do well in this type of society. The United States is considered the richest country in the world, and yet millions of its residents live in poverty. The method America used to calculate poverty levels was created in the 1960s and has not been edited substantially since it was made. Some critics maintain that the United States’ government doesn't adequately count for impoverished people who in generations past wouldn’t be considered poor but are in poverty today.

Guatemala has experienced continued economic instability, this didn’t help to close the income gap with rich countries. With this in mind, poverty and inequality in this country were always very high, with Indigenous Peoples continuing to be particularly disadvantaged. Guatemala has the sixth highest rate of chronic malnutrition in the world and the highest in Latin American countries. The Bridge-view article also states that the, “2009 World Bank report found that almost half of the population is poor, that over the last ten years, rates of poverty have only marginally declined, and that the incidence of extreme poverty – about 15 percent of the population - has remained the same.” Chronic childhood malnutrition can affect 47 % of all children under the age of five, 58 % of indigenous children, and 66 % of children in the lowest income quintile. In 2019, Guatemala was ranked 68th in food security out of 113 countries, with only 40 % of Guatemalan families enjoying food security. Compared to the United States having a rate of 83.7 percent in food security and being ranked 4th on the same chart. This shows a very significant difference between what the United States has compared to Guatemala In terms of resource amount.

Some articles state that the United States and Guatemala don’t have a lot of things in common at all. They don’t have a lot of things in common because their economies are significantly different from each other and their money making amount is different as well.

In conclusion there is a very unequal amount of resource in the United States, compared to a place like Guatemala.  For example, Guatemala’s total net worth is around 5.86 billion while the United State’s is 2.45 trillion. One surprising fact is that Guatemala has an unemployment rate of 2.5% while the United States has 3.7% . In closing, the United States has more support overall, but Guatemala needs a lot more financial support along with support to help fund their people so they can get out of poverty. In both countries there is more poverty for women than men.
